I do somewhat agree with what mistress and scaper say about people's "true personality" come out when they are online. The same argument can be made for the opposite in that a person can hide their "true personalities". I have met a person or two that seemed really chill when they were talkin to me online, but they turned out to be real douchebags when I actually met them.

I also got somewhat of a relationship online. This one girl started talkin to me and some of my friends online; we eventually met one day at like a bowling alley. To make a long story short, I started hooking up with one of her friends. But she kicked me in the nuts, metaphorically, so I havent really had a positive experience with online relationships.

Hah, I'm too young to have relationships. I don't ever plan on doing an online relationship anyway. I don't like the idea of not really seeing what you get... hehe, kind of like a window shopper. Heck I don't plan at doing relationships at all until I finish college. Gotta focus!!!

Have pity on poor poor me

It depends entirely on the person, really. While they might put up a front online, one could say that in doing so, they're still revealing their personality. I've met one or two who didn't quite turn out as expected in real life as well.

One in particular just got married and popped out a kid. Scary, thinking that I knew her when she was jailbait and flirting with anything that moved in a Farscape channel years ago...

In some ways I envy you Youngin's for having this new fangled technology to play with. I for one was married way before there was an open internet. The good side was that it was PRE-AIDS then. The only thing we worried about was a penicillin shot. (And NO I never needed one for that)

If I was in your young whipper-snapper's shoes I would do just like Mistress Eyahl. I would screen people. Well I do that now for "Friendships", not for romantic relationships. Like I have said I am married...anymore women in my life would NOT be a fun thing to do. If I was single today I would screen women though. I don't know about the months and months part. I am a male after all. However, it is a good way to get to know someone and to let someone get to know you. You are forced to use your brain. To make someone laugh it is a bit harder to do. You also better watch what you type, because it is now in black and white, no taking it back. You wouldn't for example say "I Love You" if you really didn't give it some thought before hand.

Like I said in some ways I envy you all. Then I wake up and am darn thankful I don't have to DATE anyone today. I still like to flirt...so does my wife. Nothing wrong with that. My wife lost allot of weight over the years and she looks down right HOT. So when men are flirting with her, I tell her to eat it up. Try and get their VISA card numbers. hehehe. Seriously, I enjoy sharing her (so to speak) with others. We both know we will be in the same bed together later on that evening.

ANY kind of relationship is as successfull as a coin flip. Doesn't matter where or how you meet the person, or what you want from the person, it's ALWAYS going to be a coin flip. You could have a working relationship from someone you met on the John that would last years and years and years, and yet, you could have a friend you've known all your life and start a relationship, only to find out later that it wont work out.

Being a grumpy old hermit, I don't have too many friends, but the ones I have are pretty close - even the ones I talk to online. And while sometimes theres a little drama, it always works out in the end.

Well, I have only had one on-line guildwars relationship experience. It all started when I said "LFG mission" ,ya, it was totally random like that... so i ended up with this monk, myself, and 2 henchmen. Well, we were doing the mission and we just started talking, and he seemed really nice, and he asked me if i was really a girl, and i said yes, so then he asked me to prove it... and by now i was angry at him, and just wanted to leave, but then i just asked him for his phone number, and called him. 3 hours later (on the phone) we had discussed everything from The late pope's message to young people - to both of our taste in music. It was really awsome! We continued talking for about 3 weeks, on the phone, playing guildwars, etc. But then he started to get really weird he wanted to see a pic of me, so i e-mailed him a picture of me at the beach (in a bathing suit) and from then on all he wanted to have sexual encounters and stuff... it really made me sad because he seemed like such a cool person when i first talked to him. So I blocked him and never talked to him again. From then on its sorta been hard for me to make really good friends on-line, i think that i just dont trust people as much.

Venus,

Don't let it throw ya. Law of averages state that you will meet someone you can trust. Remember though, Men are Men. Allot of them think with their Little guy. Not all though. Next time a guy wants a pic of you, send him one when you have the flu. This will test his character to the max.

Good call. Whenever I get asked out after practically "knowing" the guy for 15 minutes, I say.. "If I walked into the street tomorrow and got flattened into the tarmac by an 18 wheeler, would you still want to go out with me?"

Looks change, and yes so do personalities under extreme pressure or change, but they last a damn site longer.

Ive met people from australia and europe on another forum.. but i don't really think of them as anything other than people i know on a forum... and may or may not have on my msn list..

i try to keep to myself, so aside from GW, Forums and Diablo 2 meeting new people is not common for me

I've tried meeting a couple of girls who claimed to be my "internet girlfriends" from online before - but it's never worked out. Maybe coz they were shocked at how horrendous I look or how shy I am in the offline world. That was back in the day I used to use IRC - I never used it ever again after that since in the end you're just a bunch of pixels on the screen to them anyhow.

However in terms of just gaming buddies, I've met a few offline and they all seem to be pretty easy to get along with.

i have made lots of friends over the net , and still make contact , the normal run is .. from many diferent places to MSN messenger ..
my first making friends place was the huge MIRC irc program , still talk to many
then p2p programs like DC++ , and of corse forums , one of my best online friends came from a text RPG forum ... im not internet paranoid , internet relations are internet relations , some we wish they could be more , but distance just doesnt help.
so we keep being friends , and sure is good to know people from around the world and talk to them as if they were neiberns ...
btw feel free to add my char name in your GW frinds list
so how many , i would say a lot ... about 20 or more
i start meeting people online +/- 6 years ago

Well... to be honest.. I met a few guys online... =/ Sometimes, the people you meet online can pretty much be the closest friends you can have. =D They're not shy.. they're not... this and that.. All you need to do is get to know them. Then it either shows.. that person is a real jack ass.. or a really nice person you thought you'd never meet. =]

My first online bf I met probably.. uh... in ... umm.. starcraft? XD yes.. yes.. the game for the losers.. =P well.. It turned out.. he actually reallly looked out for me.. even though I didn't notice it myself. Um.. like around.. July 1st or so... he came and visited me. =P But by then, we had already talked on the phone.. and yada yada yada... XD He came.. and all of that goodie stuff, and ran into my dad.. X_X well.. my dad talked to him a bit.. and seemed to like him.. got to know each other more and so on.. Well I probably don't want to continue.. or bore you guys to death =P XD I'll just end.. here

My advice, don't ever get into a relationship over the internet... that said...

I have a group of friends (6) I met online, not too suprisingly, on a rp board. Out of that group, I have met 3 irl, and am planning on meeting the rest of those when I have the finances.

I am now happily living with one of the three I met (got him to move from where he was to where I am ). I did meet him a few times before we started anything though, so it wasn't a online relationship as such.

And in the meantime, I enjoy the fact I can keep in contact with people I went to school with in two different countries, simply by being available on some type of messenger prog.

I have made many good friends online over the years.
Way back in the days of Prodigy and CompusServe, I found many wonderful people that I met IRL. Yeesh, I even refer to one as my brother. =-) 10 years later, I still write to these people, and we are planning a group reunion.
Of course, there are some jerks out there, but there are jerks that you meet on the street, too. At least in a game or a discussion area you can meet folks with similiar hobbies. It seems, at least in game, that you can tell a wee bit about a person by how s/he treats teammates in a PUG. Maybe I am just a horrible judge of character.

The internet is a wonderful place where you can be anyone you want, or just be your true self. Internet friendships are great for people seperated by great distances. Internet relationships can be great for people who just need someone to talk to. As for romantic internet relationships, that can be much harder. Sometimes when you meet, you just have no chemistry. Or you just do not find each other attractive. Or one of you has really irritating habits, etc.

Just rambling on...

I used to post a lot on PlanetBlack&White, a group of us all formed a kind of clique and eventually we all progressed to IRC and added friends to msn and what not. That was over 5 years ago, we still talk, altho i kind of abesented myself for the best part of a year.

We talked of arranging meets but nothing big ever happened, a few of the group have met, a few in america, a few over here. On a few occasions we've chatted over ts and phoned each other, but i still mostly think of them as gaming buddies who i can rely on to find a game of something with. however that might be set to change

One of the guys has recently moved down near me from Scotland and we're in the process of arranging a meet up to go out on the town.

There's nothing wierd about meeting people you've encountered online if you get on ok, a friend of mine has been dating a girl he met online for a couple of years now and even moved to the states to live with her.

In another case a friend of my mothers was cheated on by her husband, and she found a new man via internet dating.

There's nothing weird, nerdy or strange about using the internet and meeting people for friends or more via it. And it does work. As i've shown and others have also.
